He was the pride of the USSR, refused money for his studies, did not touch alcohol. Stories about the Great Mayorov

Legend! “Of course, ideally, any athlete should limit himself in smoking and in alcohol. For example, I did not smoke while playing. Then he started, but threw it 15 years ago. In the end, smoking reduces your stay in big sports. But here everyone is the master of his own, ”said Boris Mayorov, the legend of Spartak. At the time of the USSR, addiction to alcohol was a scourge of many outstanding hockey players. In some cases, the regular use of strong drinks led not only to the premature end of the career, but also to death. As, for example, this happened in the case of Victor Blinov. He could become one of the best defenders of the planet, but at the age of 22 passed away. The fault is love for alcohol. In this connection, those hockey players who did not touch alcohol became real unique. One of these athletes was the legendary forward of Spartak and the USSR national team Boris Mayorov. For a long time, a two -time Olympic champion served as a captain both in the club and in the national team. Such trust from the coaching staff was ensured not only by the exceptional hockey talent of Boris, but also by the correct behavior outside the ice. Mayorov served as an example for partners – he did not violate the regime and supported the perfect physical shape.VideoThe forward himself explained his indifferent attitude to alcohol with crazy employment. After all, Boris, along with the twin brother, Eugene, was one of the few professional hockey players who, in the midst of his career, received a higher education. And in person – that is, attending almost all classes! The Mayorovs studied at the prestigious Moscow Aviation Technology Institute. And successfully finished it. Although sometimes for the sake of this I had to miss the outbound matches of his team. “In December, usually Spartak went to games in Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk, Gorky, sometimes Perm was seized. It was necessary to leave for two weeks, flew by plane, and from there to the cities by train. And December is a test session at the institute. I said to Seglin that I won’t go, because if I don’t give the test, they won’t allow me to exams. He is in response to me – I will rent a salary from you. I say – take off. And he shot, but I stayed, passed the tests, exams. Somehow it was possible to combine. Honestly, when I studied in my fifth year, I was already a famous athlete, played in the national team, the leadership of the institute went to meet me. The last session before the diploma, with the exception of military affairs, was allowed to take it when I can. And military affairs are a special article. It seems that this is within the framework of the institute, but the institute did not manage it, and I was asked to be handed over to military affairs. This had to be done in order to receive the title of reserve lieutenant. And I handed over military affairs, and then even after the World Cup, it seems, in March 1961 the last session, ”Boris said in an interview.VideoMayorov said that immediately after training, he fled to the institute in order to be in time for classes. While the forward is ghost of the granite of science, his teammates had free time. Which they often filled with a drink. So we can say that higher education provided the Olympic champion with a long and rich career – the legend of Spartak spent 13 years old in Bolshaya Hockey.
