On October 5, Microsoft will release Windows 11 as a beta upgrade for selected customers. The new operating system from the United States will be available as a free update for qualified Windows 10 PCs or pre-installed in new devices. While the free update to Windows 11 will start rolling out on October 5, it will be done in stages, as with many prior Windows upgrades. New eligible devices will be the first to receive the upgrade, followed by additional in-market devices.
According to Aaron Woodman, Microsoft’s general manager of Windows marketing, the company had learned from its Windows 10 experience and wanted to guarantee that consumers had the greatest possible experience. By the mid of 2022, Woodman predicted that all compatible devices will be provided the free upgrade.
The user interface (UI) is where the most noticeable changes in Windows 11 can be found. Microsoft has never been shy about messing with its user interface, and Windows 11 is no exception. Existing windows have a fresh appearance, and the frosted-glass effect for certain overlapping panels has been explored. Widgets are making a reappearance, and the start button has relocated.
The overall concept is a shift toward a softer, more nuanced tone. The right-angle corners that we’ve come to expect from windows have been replaced by rounded corners. It’s a little adjustment, but it does give the impression of being different—at least when the windows aren’t full screen. The taskbar has also been relocated to the center of the screen, rather than being crammed into the bottom left-hand corner. But don’t worry; with a flick of a switch on the Taskbar Settings page, you can get it back to way it was in Windows 10.
The way you organize your windows on the screen has also gotten a much-needed boost. When you move your cursor over the maximize symbol, a drop-down palette appears, allowing you to organize the multiple windows anyway you like. In Windows 10, you have some control over these things, but with easy support for windows that take up a third of the screen, or quarters of the screen, you can have a much cleaner layout.
The fundamental system requirements for Windows 11 aren’t all that different from those for Windows 10, at least in terms of processor, RAM, and graphics card. If you’re already using Windows 10 and have a suitable computer, Windows 11 will be available as a free upgrade whenever it’s released to the public, which is expected in October.
