This Friday, February 21, 2025, the premiere of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will premiere. This is the latest, eleventh main edition of the Yakuza cycle, which has been with us for 18 years! A piece of time and a piece of good history throughout four generation of consoles. Is this an outstanding series? Absolutely not. Can you have fun with her? Definitely yes! And how does the latest part promise? And what does he have to do with Ubisoft? I checked the demo as part of our cycle we have already played.
I had the first approach to Yakuza around the premiere of the sixth edition. I tried my strength with a prequel marked with number 0, but it didn't sit. Another attempt took place at the beginning of September 2024 (such a curiosity – the first Yakuza came out on September 5, 2006 on PS2) and fiercely until nice! By the end of November, I went through all the main views available on PS4 and PS5. The only items that I have not started at the moment are both parts of the judgment (being spin-off) and Like a Dragon: Ishin (Remake Yakuza: Restoration with PS3). As for each of the main parts, it is worth noting that I focused only on side tasks and the main thread – platinum only fell into Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth on PS5.Like a dragon: pirate yakuza in Hawaii / photo: PlayStation Storemimo, that the games seem repetitive, at the current stage either you love and playing it, or throws into the corner and does not come back. The biggest problem according to some players is the constant exploitation of the fictitious Kamurocho district (inspired by the real Kabukicho). If someone quotes this argument, it can be safely said that he played one, maybe two games from the Yakuza universe. In fact, the aforementioned district returns in every part – sometimes as the only map, sometimes as one of several. Only that this should be treated as a returning hero, because although it is only a collection of buildings, it also has its own story. Throughout all games, we observe a changing district that adapts to the times. One example may be the Millenium Tower, which in Yakuza 0 there is no, or being in the reconstruction of Chinatown (which for some reasons of feature was destroyed and then renovated). The same is true with mini -gags. If something works and fits into the game world, why change it?
In the latest installment, we play the role of Goro Majima, who in unexplained circumstances lost his memory and becomes a pirate. I speak again because we could play him in Yakuza 0, where he was one of the two main characters, next to the legend of the series – Kiryu Kazuma. He also had his short playable episode in the form of Majima Saga available in Yakuza Kiwy 2. I skip the fact that he is one of those heroes of the series that appears in every installment – even if only for a moment.
Again, we have Hawaii and a novelty in the form of a pirate Madlantis marina. As part of the available demo Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, we can navigate the designated area of Honolulu, where we can bite the murders to guests who had the courage to hook us. Or go to karaoke or change your appearance. The creators do not give us too much insight into the plot (praise them for that), and it's more about checking the gameplay. This one is extremely satisfying. Two struggle styles, or Mad Dog (we use a fist or a knife) and a pirate (there is a rock gun and two cordlas), they are as different as effective. There is also mass (but not in the demo) special skills, which will be eager to unlock and test in the full version.
