After waiting longer than most of the community had expected, SEGA last week released the “Sandstorm Requiem” update for Phantasty Star Online 2: New Genesis. It adds Retem's desert region, new abilities and new enemies.
For anyone who has been away from the game since it launched, you can prepare for big changes. The maximum level has been raised to 35, the missions are more varied and Retem is a region – at least as far as I've played – fantastic to explore. It's full of verticality but it also requires a good investment of time in getting the best equipment to complete the toughest quests.
As mentioned in the last NGS Headline, each class now has a new skill, these are listed below:
In addition, the game now features six elemental techniques: Wind, Light, Dark, Fire, Ice, and Lightning.
Sandstorm Requiem also features a “titles” system that had already appeared in the original Phantasy Star Online 2. In short, you can earn new titles by completing certain types of enemies, bosses or participating in urgent quests. It's more of a “cosmetic” option than anything else.
As I have a "Fighter", I found his skill at most "ok". Not fancy but way more useful than I expected. I'm still at the beginning of the new Retem story and you can already see that the content was actually scheduled to come out along with the initial version of New Genesis, but it was postponed due to the pandemic.
Pieces of the story that previously lacked an ending or even a “middle” now reach a conclusion that is at least “satisfactory” when it comes to an MMO and the enemies are more inspired than the repetition of the initial area of New Genesis.
It's also worth noting that the Christmas event in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis starts on December 22nd, with new Scratch Tickets and other limited comic items. More details are available on the official website or in the latest videos of December updates, which can be seen below:
